HOCKEY FAMILY HISTORY

SOME NOTES ON THE HOCKEY FAMILIES OF CASTLE CARY

These families have now been tied into the main Horsington Hockey tree, and further details will be found on the relevant page.

Isaac Hockey was probably born around 1800 in the Castle Cary area, and probably married Sarah Lovett at Compton Pauncefoot in February 1835. Isaac had a son John, born in Castle Cary around 1840, and probably a number of other siblings, possibly including David, Henry, James, Susan, Helen, and Jane. Isaac was buried at South Cadbury in 1871. John Hockey emigrated to the United States in 1872, along with his pregnant wife and three small children, settling in western New York state.

This family is being researched by Marty Hockey of Washington DC.

Humphrey (George) Champney Bogard Hockey was also born in Castle Cary, in 1827. He married (Elizabeth) Jane Maby (nee Rossiter) in the late 1840's and moved to Cardiff, South Wales where he died in 1893. He may have been the son of Samuel (d. 1839) and Sarah Ellen (d. 1844) Hockey and a sibling of James, Mary Ann, William, Phoebe and Ann. His descendants flourished in South Wales, and one member of the family, Alfred Hockey, emigrated to Canada, serving in the Canadian Army in WWI. The name Phoebe Hockey occurs as a witness at the marriage of Isaac and Sarah Hockey (above), and its occurrence here may support a link between these two families.

This family is being researched by Mike Pendleton of the London area.
