This page is dedicated to the history of the family of George Sayer (~1650 - 1734) of Bowes, North Yorkshire.

Historical background

It is thought that George was the son of John and Elizabeth Sayer although there is no direct evidence of this. There is however circumstantial evidence that James (~1660 - 1716), John (~1655 - ) and George were brothers.

Apart from the significant exceptions noted below, few of the families of George and Margaret’s possible eight children strayed far from Bowes. Their son John Sayer of Strandfoot (1674 - 1747) died without issue and his estate was willed to his nephews and nieces. Another son George (~1683 - <1736) moved to Staindrop.

Most of the descendants of George arise through his son William of Tutehill (1688 – 1766) and his wife Elizabeth.

One of the third generation offspring of William - John Kipling Powell (1809 - ) emigrated to Australia in 1853.One of his children, Elizabeth (Lily) married a Wesleyan missionary called Rev. Shirley Waldemar Baker (1836 – 1903) who became adviser and later, Prime Minister, to the King of Tonga and had a very eventful time there (including an assassination attempt that injured two of their children). He became very influential and provoked the ire of the British Government, convinced that he had gone native. For more details of his life see the entry in Australian Dictionary of Biography.

One of the fourth generation offspring of William - Thomas Spenceley Sayer (1837 - 1916) emigrated to Iowa in 1893 with his son Christopher Robert (1873 - 1959) and possibly younger daughters. They were following his son Thomas (~1868 - >1914) who had emigrated in the late 1880’s. Another son Henry (1862 - >1911) and some of his family followed in 1911.
