SAYER FAMILY HISTORY

This page is dedicated to the history of the family of John Sayer (1795-1862) of Chesterfield.

Historical background

John Sayer  (1795 - 1862), the youngest son of Joseph Sayer (1768 - 1822) & Ann Milner (1770 - 1858), was a draper who rose to become a prominent tradesman in Chesterfield after a starting his business in Keighley. He remained in Chesterfield for 22 years, at one time being a member of the town council, before moving to Sheffield in 1853. There his drapery business declined rapidly and he went bankrupt in 1854. Shortly before his death in 1862 he had switched to running a grocery business. He was married twice: his first wife Sarah bore him 7 children before dying in about 1830; his second wife Sarah bore him a further 6 children. He was strongly religious and became a member of the Congregationalist church. During his time in Chesterfield he was active in many areas of the town’s life and as a result his activities are well documented in the local newspapers and in the history of Chesterfield .

John and Sarah’s fifth child Henry (1846 – 1916)  went on to become Town Clerk of Sheffield. From 1883 to 1897 he held the position of Deputy Town Clerk and from 1897 to 1907 he was Town Clerk of Sheffield. He married late in life and without children his considerable fortune went to his nieces and nephews on the death of his wife in 1941.
