This page is dedicated to the history of the family of Henry Sayer (1708-1798) of Bowes, North Yorkshire.

Historical background

After the first wife of James Sayer (~1660 - 1716) died he married Mary Bainbridge (1662 - 1741) who was possibly the sister of his first wife.  They had four children but Henry Sayer (1708 - 1798) was the only one known to have descendants.  These descendants were predominantly yeoman farmers in either the Bowes or Brough under Stainmore areas.  Henry Sayer was quite a wealthy man when he died in 1798 and according to his will he owned property in both Bowes and Brough as well as being able to leave substantial bequests to his children and grandchildren.

William Sayer (1817 - >1881) was one of the few descendants to move away from the Bowes/Brough area albeit only as far as Easington where he traded as a greengrocer. His son Henry (1846 - >1887) drifted further north to Newcastle and at one time was an engine driver.
