SAYER FAMILY HISTORY

This page is dedicated to the history of the branch of the Sayer family from Osmotherley, North Yorkshire.

Historical background

The Manor House at High Worsall in the parish of Northallerton, North Yorkshire , no longer exists, but lay on the south bank of the River Tees, 5 miles upstream of Yarm. The Sayers, who settled at Worsall Manor in the mid 15th century, were a succession of well-to-do squires farming on an extensive scale who gradually extended throughout much of North Yorkshire and the Durham borders. However, being persistent, and later sometimes militant, recusants the Worsall Sayers gradually lost much of their extensive property including eventually, the Manor itself, in about 1670.

The article by J P Sayer in The Catholic Ancestor on the SAYER Family of Worsall refers to a main branch of the family centred on Hutton Rudby, some 5 or 6 miles from Osmotherley but the article makes no reference to Osmotherley. About 1982 David Moore ( USA and Wensleydale Branch) was living in London for a short period and found two small documents linking the SAYER name from Hutton Rudby with Osmotherley. These included a small Family Tree starting with Leonard Sair (bap 1628 Hutton Rudby), followed by a son Thomas (bap 1657 Hutton Rudby), and then by his son,William (bap 1692), extending to 2 more generations. "

William and Wife Elizabeth (nee Alderson ) had 5 children, 3 being recorded in the Osmotherley Register. Thomas (bap 1722) was their second child. He settled 10 miles west, at Scruton, at some point as his Marriage Record to Alice Marwood at Kirby Sigston in 1754 states that he was “of Scruton” .

Thomas had 3 sisters who all married and moved away from Osmotherley, and a brother, Bartholomew, who also moved to Scruton, thus ending this short connection with Osmotherley. This small family group is now part of the Hutton Rudby Branch of the main Worsall Tree.

The main tree

The present Osmotherley Tree begins shortly after the first group appear to have left Osmotherley. Little documentary evidence, other than Church and Census records, has come to light so far except for one Will, that of James in 1841. Those records indicate that, apart from assuming the usual village Trades and Crafts (several SAYERS were Shoemakers) there was a Brickworks, and Linen Manufacture and Bleaching also provided employment during the 18th and 19th centuries.

A George Sayer/Sair, for whom no birth or marriage dates have been found, is recorded in the baptismal register at Leake, 4 miles from Osmotherley, as Father of George (1748), Matthew (1751), James (1754) and Mary (1758). Nothing more is known of James and Mary but Matthew married Jane Butterwick in 1778 at Thirkleby, about 8 miles from Leake. They lived at nearby Kilburn and had 8 children. (We also have another three SAYER Family Groups in the Felixkirk/Kilburn area . Work continues to try and find links between these several groups and details will be added to this site at a later date.)

Meanwhile, George Sayer (1748) married Ellen Cook in 1769 at Osmotherley  wherE they had 6 children baptised - William (1770), Rebecca (1772), Alice (1775), Elizabeth (1779) who died young,Elizabeth (1781) and James (1782).

Information on William and James is minimal; both married  (William to Sarah Buck in 1806 and James to Frances ? abt 1810 ) with one surviving child from each marriage. Likewise we have no further details on Elizabeth . On the other hand we know that Rebecca married Thomas Reed in 1791 at Osmotherley where they had 8 children, all born in Osmotherley.  Descendents can be traced forward to Brian Wareing who was researching this Family in 2004, and to Kenneth Bolton  ( USA ) .

Now we should turn to Alice, the remaining member of this particular family, who provided the greater number of Osmotherley SAYERS.

Alice Sayer

Alice (1775) the daughter of George and Ellen Sayer, had an illegitimate son, George (1797). It is likely that this Alice later married Thomas Lee in 1809 at Leake, while.

George (1797) married Mary Yates in 1822 .

George and Mary had 10 children, 3 dying at an early age. Several of the boys married and raised sizeable families ensuring that the SAYER name became well established in Osmotherley: John (1823) married Betsy King; Thomas (1825) married Ellen Christon; William (1827) married Rachel Nattrass; Christopher (1836-1914 ) finally left home and married Fances Pollitt in 1887, aged 50, following the death of his father (he already had a considerable number of children with her out of wedlock baptised under the surname Pollitt); the 5th  son, Matthew (1839) never married but of the two surviving daughters, Mary Ellen (1841) married John Dinsdale and Alice (1845) married William Lowe. Albert Day and George Sayers descend from this line.

This version of the tree has been drawn up by Laurel Sayer and includes information provided by several other researchers, listed below. Whilst the SAYER content is complete to the best of our knowledge, and as accurate as we can make it based on the information currently available, many of the side branches have been trimmed.

As with most pedigrees, this is a work in progress, and any comments or additions will be welcomed and should be sent to Laurel Sayer.
