Historical background

There have been Smallwoods in Gloucestershire from an early date, and a fuller analysis of the early family structure and related localities will be added here shortly.

John Smallwood (alias Winchcombe) was probably born in Winchcombe in Gloucestershire around 1465, and became a prominent clothier in Newbury, Berkshire, being known by the appellation 'Jack of Newbury'. His biography is outlined on the Berkshire History Website.
