THE SMALLWOOD FAMILY OF BROMPTON BY NORTHALLERTON (TREE 110)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Robert and Mary Smallwood first appear having children in Brompton near Northallerton in the late 1740's, but there is no evidence for an earlier Smallwood presence in the area. This fact, combined with the first name patterns in the family, and the evidence for a later link to Kendal among Robert and Mary's descendants, suggests that the family probably had their origins in the area of Kendal in Westmorland. The most likely candidate for Robert is the son of Joseph and Mary Smallwood of Kendal, baptised there in 1714, although Robert the son of Abraham and Grace Smallwood (baptised in 1728) currently remains an alternative candidate, despite the less suitable dates and first name inheritance patterns. Several of Robert and Mary's children appear to have moved on to the Yorkshire coast, although this large geographical leap remains an area for further research. While there are no known alternative candidates among the existing Smallwood families of the coastal areas, and the first name patterns appear to suggest a link to this family, the catalyst for such a significant move currently remains unclear. What we know is that a William Smallwood of exactly the right age was buried in Bridlington in East Yorkshire in 1803, having fathered children there in the 1780's and early 1790's. A contemporary Mary Smallwood mothered two illegitimate sons (the persuasively named Robert, and Luke) in Bridlington, also in the 1780's, and although her apparent burial in 1833 suggests an earlier birthdate, the other circumstantial evidence suggests that she may have been William's sister. Her descendant tree, the later Smallwoods of Bridlington, is also separately discussed as tree 114. In addition to William and Mary in Bridlington, it is also probable that Robert and Mary's son Joseph married and settled in Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, where he lived as a sailor, providing a possible explanation of his move along the coast.
