SMALLWOOD FAMILY HISTORY
THE SMALLWOOD FAMILY OF AIKTON AND BOWNESS-ON-SOLWAY, CUMBRIA (TREE 384)
Between 1555 and 1562, a Robert Smallwood was the master gunner of the Citadel of Carlisle, and it seems likely that he was antecedent to the Smallwood family which later flourished in the northern part of Cumberland; in the area of Whitrigg on the borders of the parishes of Aikton and Bowness-on-Solway, about 8 miles to the west of Carlisle.
In 1656, another Robert Smallwood was among the compilers of the inventory of Richard Backhouse of Whitrigglees, and it would appear that this same Robert died at Laythes in the parish of Aikton around 1676, his will being proved at Carlisle. The George Smallwood, yeoman of neighbouring Anthorn, whose will was proved in 1685, may well have been Robert's son, while the John Smallwood (c.1645-1716) with whom we commence the tree below may well represent the next generation of the same line. A review of the original probate evidence would undoubtedly clarify the picture, but what is clear is that the family had lived in the area for some time before the commencement of the surviving parish registers in the 1660's.
The descendants of John's son Robert spread southwards from Whitrigg to Holme Cultram parish and thence inland to Bromfield and Torpenhow, where they still flourished at the start of the 20th century. The descendants of Robert's apparent brother George remained in the Whitrigg area into the 19th century before migrating inland to the area of Hesket in the Forest, Wreay, and the outskirts of Carlisle, where the male line appears to have died out.
OUTLINE OF TREE
While this version of the consolidated tree has been prepared by Ian Hall, it may also incorporate the input of several of the other researchers listed below, and also that of David Smallwood of Worcestershire. It remains a work in progress, and any comments and contributions are very welcome. Ancestral lines of family researchers are highlighted in bold type, with a link to the corresponding lists of researchers. Individuals whose parentage is uncertain have a [?] inserted into their name.
