SMALLWOOD FAMILY HISTORY
THE SMALLWOODS OF HANDSWORTH WHO SETTLED IN COLSTON BASSETT AND BARNSLEY (TREE 49)
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Thomas and Martha Smallwood baptised several children in Handsworth, Staffordshire, between 1783 and 1798, and after Martha's death in 1798 the whole family may have moved to Colston Bassett in Nottinghamshire, where their son John later had a family and their daughter Jane married. John's son Henry (1817-1864) left Colston Bassett for Leicestershire, with descendants later settling in Bristol, while his son William (1822-1859) settled in Barnsley in West Yorkshire, initiating a local line which flourished down to the present.
