THE SMALLWOOD FAMILY OF ALLERSTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE (TREE 53)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Smallwood family were present in the Allerston area since at least the beginning of the 17th century, and as discussed on the Early North and East Yorkshire trees page (tree 197), the Richard Smallwood who heads this tree was probably the grandson of the Matthew Smallwood who married Alice Smith there in 1606. It is also possible that he was the same as the Richard Smallwood baptised in New Malton in 1621, but the locality and dates seem less than persuasive. Richard married Alice Allan in Allerston in 1661, was taxed there in 1662, and buried there in 1682, leaving three sons and three daughters.

Richard's son Philip initiated a line of descendants who spread to Birdsall, Rillington, Nafferton and Driffield in North and East Yorkshire and (with the name Piercy) to East Retford (Nottinghamshire) and Swansea (Glamorgan). His son Thomas appears to have moved from Allerston via Wykeham (where the three later children were baptised between 1715 and 1719) to Scalby (where he was buried in 1755). As things stand, Thomas's son John is the best candidate for a 1759 marriage to Martha Petch in Scalby, North Yorkshire, the beginning of the substantial Scalby Smallwood tree (tree 227); but the relatively advanced age of this John and the possibility of other, currently unknown, local candidates must cast some doubt on this link.
