SMALLWOOD FAMILY HISTORY

THE  SMALLWOODS OF WEST MALLING, KENT (TREE 553)

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

A Smallwood line flourished in West Malling from the late 18th century, with branches later spreading to Dover, East Malling, Southwark, Newington and Walworth. This line has been documented by Debra Buchanan.

OUTLINE OF TREE

A Thomas Smallwood married Ann Fentiman (bapt 1782, West Malling) at All Saints, Maidstone in 1799, and they went on to baptise 19 children in West Malling between 1800 and 1826. Their sons John, Samuel, Joseph and George all went on to have families locally, with John and Joseph remaining in West Malling, Samuel settling in Dover, and George moving to East London. George's son James (1850) was ancestral to a later East London line in Newington, Walworth and Southwark.
