SMALLWOOD FAMILY HISTORY

DESCENDANTS OF  CHARLES SMALLWOOD OF BEAUFORT COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

Charles Smallwood (b.c.1760, possibly in Virginia, died before 1823 in Beaufort County, North Carolina) was settled in Beaufort County with his family by the date of the 1790 census. This family is ancestral to Ray Gurganus, and details of Charles' descendants are included in Ray's excellent website.

Earlier research (apparently based on Marilu Burch Smallwood's book 'Some Colonial and Revolutionary Families of NC') had equated Charles to the son of James Smallwood and Catherine Clark, part of the descendant family of Colonel James Smallwood of Maryland, but the dates now appear inconsistent, with James and Catherine having their family largely in the 1790's. Work published by R.T.Bonner suggests that Charles may have arrived from Shropshire, England, but investigation in this area continues.
