SOMERSET RESEARCH GUIDE

This page is intended as a guide to genealogical sources for the County of Somerset.

The principal repository for original records relating to the area is the Somerset Record Office [SRO] in Taunton.

Parish records

A map of the parishes in south Somerset is attached, along with an initial guide to the coverage of this area by baptism indices. Apart from the IGI, the principal baptism index covering Somerset is Dr. Campbell's index, a card index focused primarily on the parishes of the Taunton archdeaconry and held at the SRO. In addition, a number of transcripts covering parishes overlooked by the IGI or Dr. Campbell have been compiled by Sarah Hawkins and Duncan Weir, and several of these are available online and therefore easily searchable.

More detailed summaries of local resources are available for the following villages :

Montacute Norton sub Hamdon Stoke sub Hamdon
Tintinhull
