THE WORK OF J.P.SAYER

Introduction

The object of these pages is to give wider publicity to the researches of J.P.Sayer into the SAYER Family of The North Riding of Yorkshire. In the section  Sayers of the London Branch  he outlines how this research began and progressed. His only published work appeared in The English Catholic Ancestor in 1988/9 ( he died in 1984 ). This work was reprinted in The Journal of the Cleveland Family History Society in 2003/4.

It was apparent that JPS…as he is known to this small group of researchers…. had gathered more information than appeared in this paper. After a little searching we were able to find his daughter Mrs Gill Ward, who readily agreed to make his papers available for inspection.

There is no question that JPS was a dedicated genealogist, always providing good references to his source material and also providing a wealth of background information. When we remember that the Internet, with its Mailing Lists and other sources of information did not exist in his day we can only admire the quality of his work.

JPS was, by training, a Commercial Artist and all his records were written in a very clear hand. These were recorded in several separate sections and inevitably some duplication of material occurred. After a little consideration it was decided to use the Catholic Ancestor article together with a section "Sayer Families from Teesside". These are all connected to the North Riding of Yorkshire and South Durham but with branches into London and Southern counties.

The remaining sections of JP's work include some additional material on the Northern Sayers but are otherwise concerned with Sayer Families in East Anglia and the South Eastern counties. Some are quite detailed whilst others are simple 3 generation trees derived from Wills.

Without the help of Mrs Gill Ward this project would not have been possible and we are extremely grateful for her support. Both the Catholic Family History Society and the Cleveland Family History Society have also given their support.

In addition we must acknowledge the part played in Typing , Web Page Preparation etc. by
David Moore, Ian Sayer, Laurel Sayer and Harry Sayer. Their interests and contact addresses can be found elsewhere on this site.
Finally we are most indebted to Ian Hall for providing space on his Web Site.
