SAYER FAMILY HISTORY

The Sayres of North Otterington and Kirby Sigston

John Sayre’s son, Lancelot (1636), married Ann in about 1653/54, the year Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of England .  The couple settled in North Otterington where eight children were baptised between 1654-1672, including sons George, William, Simon, Thomas, Robert, and James.

Of these, William Sayre married Katherine Cudbert there in 1682 and had five children baptised at North Otterington . Nothing more is known about them or any of their possible descendents.

A sister, Isabell Sayer, also married there in 1696. No children to her and husband Nathaniel Parkinson have yet been identified.

Brother James Sayer married Mary Artist in 1690 and had twin sons baptised at North Otterington in 1691, followed by two other children shortly after father Lancelot’s death in 1694.  One of the twins, another James, married Mary Tutin at Brompton by Northallerton, 4 miles north, in 1711. Mary is thought to have been the daughter of one of the Tutin families of Kirby Sigston, some of whom became prosperous farmers from the late 1700s onwards, possibly as a result of the Industrial Revolution which saw the first navigation canals, Watt improve his steam engine and the invention of the Spinning Jenny.

James and Mary settled at Kirby Sigston, which lies about 4-5 miles equidistant from Brompton, North Otterington and Lovesome Hill, and still only 2.5 miles from Leake.  The following year Mary had son James (1712), and possibly a son William (1711/12, though that baptism has not yet been identified).
