The Sayres of Hutton Bonville

As to James and Elizabeth ’s son John (1734), he was described in the West Rounton parish registers as residing at `Worston, Durham ' (over which some mystery remains) at the time of his marriage to Dorothy Harrison in 1770, witnessed by brothers James Sayer and William Sayer. The couple settled near Hutton Bonville, in the parish of Birkby, some 4 miles north of Northallerton where John became a reasonably well off Yeoman farmer - Land Tax records indicate that John and brother Michael had a holding at Hutton Bonville between 1781 and 1785 (John was the Assessor there in 1781 and 1785 and the Collector in 1784), and by 1807, according to the Poll Book, was living at Lovesome Hill, and had a freehold at West Rounton. By the time John died in 1814 he had amassed an estate totalling over £600.  Of John and Dorothy’s 5 children, John Sayer (1771), a gentleman farmer, married Elizabeth Walker and settled at Stub Thorn, in Brompton but appears to have had no children; Dorothy (1774) married John Geldart and had 2 daughters; and Margaret (1777) married John Lowther an Innkeeper and Blacksmith and had at least 5 children.
