SAYER FAMILY HISTORY

The Sayers and Feethams of Yarm and London

John and Dorothy Sayer’s youngest, and questionably the most successful, son William (1779) took over the Mill at Middleton on Leven after the death of his two uncles, James and William Sayer, in 1815. Seven years later, and aged about 43, he married Margaret Feetham, 11 years his junior. The business flourished and in 1838 William sold his steam Corn Mill at Yarm. The 1841 census described William as the Relieving Officer for Yarm, that is, an official of the Poor Law Union to whom the poor or retarded persons in the parish could apply for poor relief.  And in 1848 a William Sayer, gentleman, is listed as the owner of a house, garden and orchard, with eight acres of land and the registered owner of a 23 ton sloop, the `Elizabeth' . William died in 1858 and wife Margaret followed 4 years later, both being buried at Yarm and commemorated by a plaque on the wall of the south aisle of the church.

William and Margaret’s daughter Elizabeth Sayer (1824) married James Coates, Merchant of London, in 1852. Their eldest son, Edward Feetham Coates, born at Clapham, London in 1853, built on the family’s success - he is listed in the 1891 census at Ewell, Surrey with wife, son and 3 servants, became a Member of Parliament, and in 1911 received a baronetcy. He was also Lieut. for the City of London and CC for Surrey , Capt and Hon major late 3rd battalion Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regt.

Meanwhile, William and Margaret’s son Edward Sayer (1823-1897) became part of the very successful Mark Feetham & Co., Stove manufacturers of London , married Emma Pearson and lived in London Westminster, and Brighton . They had at least 7 children of whom the eldest, William Feetham Sayer, a Hydraulic Engineer married twice and settled in Finchley; Charles an Architect married and moved to Chelsea ; and Mark a Batchelor of Medicine married but died in his 40s. Interestingly, of  two of the remaining sons, Michael John Sayer (another Hydraulic Engineer) married Emily Dixey the daughter of an Insurance broker, while his brother John Feetham  Sayer married her sister Ella.  Family researcher John Pearson Sayer, a Commercial Artist of Finchley and Wandsworth, was their son.
